Women’s Mental Health
While most mental health conditions and disorders do not discriminate between genders, there are some conditions that affect women only. Perinatal depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and perimenopause-related depression are some examples of mental health problems that only affect women due to their interconnectedness with the female reproductive system.
Perinatal depression is a form of clinical depression that can occur during pregnancy or in the first few months after childbirth. It is thought to be caused by a combination of hormonal changes and the stress of adjusting to motherhood. Thankfully, with the right support, mothers who are struggling with perinatal depression can overcome their symptoms and enjoy a healthy and happy bonding experience with their babies.
It's no secret that mood changes are a common symptom of perimenopause. But for some women, the emotional roller coaster ride can be much more than just a nuisance. For some, it can lead to even depression. While the exact cause of perimenopause-related depression is not fully understood, it is thought to be linked to the hormonal changes that take place during this time.
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMDD affects approximately 3-8% of women during their reproductive years. It is characterized by changes in mood, behavior, and physical symptoms that occur during the second half of the menstrual cycle, typically starting 7-10 days before menstruation. Symptoms of PMDD may include irritability, depression, anxiety, fatigue, and changes in appetite. These symptoms can interfere with work, school, and personal relationships.
